Thad Dohrn recently concluded his 20th year with DePaul, where he currently works as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development. Dohrn first joined the DePaul athletics department as the Director fo Development in April 2004 before being promoted to Senior Director in 2007 and his current position in 2019. Dohrn additionally serves as a member of the department's senior leadership team.
During Dohrn’s tenure, Athletic Development has raised more than $49.2 million, averaging $2.5 annually. The decade prior to his arrival, DePaul averaged just more than $500,000 annually. Athletic Development has directly secured three gifts totaling $15.3 million, including the largest commitment in athletics history ($8.8 million). In all Athletics has received nine commitments of more than $1 million.
Since 2004, Athletics has booked more than 200 major gift commitments, including 78 gifts of more than $100,000. In the rest of DePaul Athletics history, Athletics had compiled 33 gifts of more than $25,000 and 10 gifts of more than $100,000.
During Dohrn’s tenure, athletics secured gifts that resulted in 57 new named endowed scholarships including an endowed scholarship for every sport and collaborated with colleges to creatively establish named athletics endowed scholarships for five student-athletes whom are studying certain disciplines. Prior to his arrival DePaul had 12 endowed scholarships and funds.
Athletics Development has reached its goals in each of the three campaigns since 2004: Wintrust Arena Campaign surpassed its philanthropic goal of $20 million, Many Dreams. One Mission capital campaign closed the campaign with more than $17 million to complete the $14 million objective and the Sullivan-McGrath Athletics Campaign finished with $3.2 million to eclipse the $2.9 million goal.
Dohrn came to DePaul after spending two years in Columbia University's athletics department as the Associate Director of External Affairs and Communications. In his duties with the Lions, Dohrn managed the Office of Athletic Communications, as well as being responsible for alumni relations and annual giving to athletics.
Prior to moving to New York, Dohrn spent nine years as a member of the athletics staff at Iowa State. In his last five years with the Cyclones, he served as both the Assistant Director of Marketing and as the Letterwinners Club Liaison.
Prior to that, Dohrn worked in the athletics media relations office and assisted in various aspects of the administration, marketing and promotions of Iowa State athletics. Dohrn was instrumental in the growth of membership of the ISU Letterwinners Club and developed the ISU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Along with his duties in Ames, Dohrn served as the softball correspondent for the official Olympic web page at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
As a relief pitcher, Dohrn captained the Cyclone baseball team in both 1994 and 1995. Following his Iowa State experience, he pitched in Austria's Zweite Bundesliga for the Schwechat Blue Bats during the summer of 1995. Dohrn and his wife both completed the 2002 Ironman Wisconsin.
Dohrn holds a pair of degrees from Iowa State, earning a B.A. in journalism and mass communications in 1994 and a M.S. in exercise and sport science, with an emphasis in sports administration in 1997.
A native of Austinville, Iowa, Thad and his wife, Stephanie, a former volleyball player at Iowa State, have a daughter Madison and a son Will and reside in Schaumburg, Ill.
