DePaul wins fifth-straight game against Big Ten opponent
MINNEAPOLIS – A balanced attack from DePaul men's basketball led the Blue Demons to a road-win against Minnesota, 69-53. The game marked DePaul's fifth-straight victory against a Big Ten opponent and fourth-straight in the Gavitt Games.
Javan Johnson led DePaul with his second 20-point outing of the season on 7-of-15 shooting. The double-digit scoring threats were rounded out by Philmon Gebrewhit's 15, 14 from Umoja Gibson and 10 by Eral Penn. Penn notched a game-high 14 rebounds for his 20th career double-double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota opened the game with a 9-6 lead before Philmon Gebrewhit provided a big spark off the bench and drained back-to-back three-pointers. DePaul would never trail again in the game after taking the lead three minutes later on a second-chance dunk from Penn. DePaul ran out to 12-point lead to end the first half.
DePaul held off a scrappy Gopher comeback attempt in the second half. Minnesota chipped away at the lead with a 12-2 run, pulling within single digits, 51-42. The game hung around a nine-point DePaul lead before the Blue Demons defense turned it up a notch and held Minnesota without a field goal for five minutes.
