
Santa Clara Hands DePaul First Loss

DePaul drops first contest of 2022-23 season
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In the teams opening game of the Baha Mar Bahamas Championships, the DePaul men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought, 69-61, contest against Santa Clara.
DePaul (3-1) fought their way back from as large as a 17-point deficit in the first half to pull the game within four on two separate occasions. Ultimately, Santa Clara's presence on the glass boosted them to the win.
Umoja Gibson led DePaul in scoring for the second time this season with 18 points, followed by 14 from Javan Johnson. Eral Penn led the team with 11 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Santa Clara ended the first half on a 30-6 run to take a 43-28 lead into halftime. Despite being down at halftime, the Blue Demons came out with a reinvigorated defensive energy where the held Santa Clara to six-consecutive empty possessions.
A 7-0 run, led by an aggressive rebounding performance from Da'Sean Nelson, pulled DePaul within eight. The Blue Demons continued to chip away with 19 points off Santa Clara turnovers, but ultimately wasn't able to close the gap further.
