DePaul Wards Off Providence in 78-69 Victory

Morrow and Rogers combine for 53 as DePaul moves to 3-0 in BIG EAST play
CHICAGO – Aneesah Morrow and Darrione Rogers combined for 53 points as DePaul held off a second-half surge by the visiting Providence Friars in a 78-69 win at Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night. The Blue Demons improved to 10-4 on the season and remain unbeaten in BIG EAST play with a record of 3-0.
Morrow totaled 29 points and added a season-high 19 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season and 37th of her career while Rogers poured in 24 points including a 12-for-14 mark from the free throw line to go along with five assists and two steals.
Kendall Holmes added nine points while Anaya Peoples netted seven with four boards. Zaria Hurston and Jorie Allen collected seven rebounds apiece.
The Blue Demons were +12 on the glass, outrebounding the Friars 47-35, while turning 15 Providence turnovers into 24 points.
After trailing by five early, the Blue Demons embarked on a 17-2 run to take a 17-7 lead and later closed out the first quarter in front 30-15.
The Blue Demons held the Friars to just three field goals and nine second quarter points to take a 46-24 lead into the locker room. After 20 minutes, Morrow had 17 points and six rebounds while Rogers scored 16.
Providence (9-6, 0-4) made four three-point field goals and outscored the Blue Demons 28-12 in the third quarter to shrink what once was a 24-point lead to six heading into the final period of play.
Back-to-back buckets from Holmes and Morrow stretched DePaul's lead to double digits three minutes into the fourth, but Providence answered right back to cut it to a one possession game, 69-66, at the media timeout. A timely three from Peoples followed by made free throws down the stretch from Rogers and Holmes allowed the Blue Demons to pull away with the win.
Brynn Farrell led Providence with 22 points.
