Blue Demons Open 2023 Against Providence

CHICAGO – Following the teams first BIG EAST win of the season, the DePaul men's basketball team looks to build upon it with a New Year's Day matchup against Providence. The game is slated for a 1:30 p.m. tip on FS1 with Jeff Levering and Brian Butch on the call.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
Umoja Gibson led DePaul (7-7) to its 83-76 win against Georgetown Thursday evening thanks to a 31-point performance. Gibson also contributed five assists, four steals and four boards in the win. The graduate student continues to show his impact as he ranks ninth nationally in both free throw percentage and steals in addition to 23rd in assists.
DePaul was boosted against the Hoyas thanks to 50 percent shooting from behind-the-arc. Gibson and Johnson both contributed five three-pointers as the Blue Demons are 5-0 this season when making nine or more three-pointers.
The Georgetown game also saw a return of both Jalen Terry and Yor Anei to the Blue Demons starting lineup. Anei's last start came Nov. 14 against Minnesota but DePaul is 4-0 with Anei in the starting lineup.
THE SERIES
Providence leads the all-time series 36-13, including a pair of wins against DePaul last season. In the second meeting between the two teams, the Blue Demons pushed Providence into OT. The Friars eventually came away with a 76-73 win.

Providence comes into Wintrust Arena with a six-game winning streak, including a double overtime win against Marquette. The Friars are led by Kentucky transfer Bryce Hopkins who is averaging 15.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. The team currently ranks seventh in the country in rebound margin and 31st in blocks per game.
