
Blue Demons Host UTEP Saturday Evening

Two teams meet for first team in over 90 years
CHICAGO – Following a pair of back-to-back road games, the DePaul men's basketball team returns to Wintrust Arena for a Saturday evening matchup against UTEP. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip on FS1 with Chris Vosters and Dickey Simpkins on the call. Fans can also listen live to the radio broadcast on DePaulBlueDemons.com.
Saturday's game, sponsored by Lincoln Common, serves as the season's annual holiday game. A special t-shirt giveaway is available for all students in attendance as well as a post-game season ticket holder photo opportunity on the court.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
After winning back-to-back games, DePaul (5-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped its BIG EAST opener Wednesday evening at St. John's. Zion Cruz and Da'Sean Nelson were bright spots in the game, with Cruz scoring a career-high 14 points. Nelson was just shy of his first career double-double, ending the night with 13 points and nine rebounds while being a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor. He is the first DePaul player to go perfect from the field (min. 5 shots) since Jaylen Butz vs. Georgetown on Feb. 22, 2020.
Javan Johnson is the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week following a pair of games where he averaged 27.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds. He posted 27 points in the Blue Demons comeback win against Loyola to also earn National Player of the Week honors. Johnson ranks second in the BIG EAST with 17.6 points per game.
THE SERIES
Saturday marks the second all-time meeting between the two programs and first in over 90 years. The last matchup took place during the 1929-30 season in El Paso where DePaul won, 38-29.
SCOUTING UTEP
UTEP comes to the Windy City with a 6-2 record through the start of the 2022-23 season. The Miners have won six of their last seven games, including a split series against New Mexico State. Southern Miss transfer, Tae Hardy, leads UTEP with 12.9 points per game while Mario McKinney Jr. is also averaging double-digits off the bench.
Joe Golding is in his second season at the helm of the Miner program, following a successful run at his alma matter Abilene Christian. While at ACU, Golding led the Wildcats to 20+ wins in his last three seasons. UTEP had a 20-14 record in Golding's first season.
