Six Blue Demons in double figures spark BIG EAST win at Georgetown
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Even though most people were anxiously awaiting that big football game that kicked off in Los Angeles, DePaul had a pretty Super Sunday all of its own.
In the most dramatic, topsy-turvy, nerve-wracking game of the season, the Blue Demons battled through two overtimes and emerged with a 105-104 victory over Georgetown.
There were so many heroines at so many big moments.
Let's just start with the ending as Lexi Held, Deja Church and Aneesah Morrow came through with big-time points in the second overtime. Church's basket off a Morrow steal made it 101-97.
After Georgetown scored, Morrow buried a pair of crucial foul shots with 1:24 left. Back came the Hoyas to make it 103-101. With 4.3 seconds, Held provided a 105-101 lead with two free throws---totally negating Milan Bolden-Morris' three-pointer at the buzzer.
Morrow was magnificent once again with 28 points, 18 rebounds and four steals. Sonya Morris, who wasn't expected to play, made a dramatic second-half entrance and scored 19 points at the times when her team needed it the most.
Church and Darrione Rogers scored 17 points apiece, Kierra Collier contributed 11 and Lexi Held had 10 to give DePaul six players in double figures.
It was a one-point game entering the fourth quarter with the road team down. Milan Bolden-Morris hit back-to-back threes at the outset of the quarter for a 67-60 Hoyas lead as DePaul called timeout.
Trailing the entire game, the Blue Demons (20-7, 12-4 BIG EAST) began to turn it around. Church, Morris and Rogers keyed a surge that tied it 83-83 in the final minutes. After Kelsey Ransom scored with 24 seconds, Morrow hit her biggest shot of the season with one second, and it was 85-85 after regulation time.
Talk about tension. The lead went back and forth pretty much the entire first overtime. It was one clutch shot after the other by both teams. Morris and Church came up big for the team in blue and Morrow was all over the place making steals, assists and baskets.
Morrow's steal and assist set up Rogers for a layup. Morris followed with a three and then Morrow struck again with a steal and assist to Morris for a 92-88 lead.
Georgetown (7-15, 2-12) would not quit. Morrow's free throws provided a 94-90 led when the Hoyas scored four in a row to mandate a second OT.
Not expected to play, Sonya Morris entered the game with 5:30 left in the third quarter. Her name was entered in the official scorebook but had a line drawn through it indicating a scratch. As a result, Georgetown was awarded a technical foul shot which was missed.
Morrow, Rogers and Church sparked a surge that brought their team with 50-48 when the Hoyas went on a 7-1 burst to lead 57-49 at the media timeout.
DePaul was down 10 when Morris fed Morrow for a layup and then was the recipient of a pretty no-look pass from Held for her own layup.
It was 59-53 Georgetown at the second media timeout.
The Blue Demons closed out the third quarter on an 11-1 run to close within 61-60 heading into the final 10 minutes. Morrow, Morris and five quick points from Collier sparked the rally.
Morrow had six points early in the first quarter as Georgetown got off to a 14-11 lead at the first quarter media timeout. Rogers had a three-pointer and Church a layup.
As has been the pattern in recent games, the taller Hoyas were having some success attacking inside.
A 10-0 burst propelled the home team to a 22-15 lead late in the quarter. Kendall Holmes buried a three-pointer seconds before the buzzer and DePaul was within 22-18 after the first 10 minutes.
It's possible there was a bit of complacency at the outset as DePaul had beaten Georgetown 102-69 in the first meeting.
Georgetown opened the second quarter with three scores including a pair of baskets down lot prompting DePaul coach Doug Bruno to call timeout with his team down 28-20.
The Hoyas went ahead 39-29 when Held hit a three and on the next possession converted a foul shot. Church followed up with a basket and DePaul was within 40-35. Rogers hit a jumper and it was 41-37 until Georgetown hit a buzzer-beater to lead 43-37 at halftime.
Church had 10 points and Morrow and Rogers eight apiece at the break.
DePaul is back home Wednesday at Wintrust Arena for a BIG EAST showdown against storied rival Marquette that tips at 7 p.m.
