Huge Rivalry Game Wednesday Night Heats Up South Loop

DePaul and longtime nemesis Marquette tip at 7 p.m. at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – There's nothing like a good old-fashioned rivalry game to stoke the embers on a cold winter's day.
Both DePaul (20-7, 12-4 BIG EAST) and longtime nemesis Marquette (17-7, 10-5) will come out with fire in their eyes Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena.
The Blue Demons have not forgotten their 88-85 overtime loss Jan. 12 in Milwaukee when they let the game slip away at the end.
As for the Golden Eagles, they would like nothing better than to play the spoiler role and ruin the first game coach Doug Bruno's first game after being selected to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday.
Speaking of that prodigious lifetime honor, none other than BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman put the 36-year DePaul coach squarely in the BIG EAST spotlight.
"All of us at the BIG EAST are overjoyed to see DePaul head coach Doug Bruno's career achievements recognized with his richly deserved selection as a member of Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022," Ackerman said.
"A three-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year, five-time BIG EAST Tournament champion and six-time BIG EAST regular-season champion, coach Bruno has had an extraordinary record of success in our league, and his tireless advocacy for women's basketball for more than four decades has helped elevate the sport to the great heights it enjoys today.
"We're grateful to be among the countless student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters whom Doug has mentored and inspired over the years, and we look forward to celebrating this tremendous honor with him, Patty and their family at the induction ceremony in Knoxville in June."
Ackerman was at the DePaul men's basketball game Tuesday night against Butler and joined DePaul Athletics Director DeWayne Peevy and retired Athletics Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto in a special recognition of Bruno's achievement.
Five television stations spent more than a half hour on DePaul's Lincoln Park campus Tuesday filming interviews with the man-of-the-hour including ABC 7's noted news reporter John Garcia who's piece aired during the news segment of Channel 7's 4:30 p.m. newscast.
Bruno made certain to thank his mentors and those who made his Hall of Fame career possible including legendary Blue Demon coach Ray Meyer, his Quigley South coach Dick Flaiz, time-honored administrators and coaches Gene Sullivan and Frank McGrath along with his former player, assistant coach and eventual boss, Ponsetto.
Despite all the healthy and welcome distractions plus the overwhelming number of tweets, emails and phone calls from well-wishers and longtime friends, the iconic Blue Demon coach narrowed his focus and locked in on the critical game with Marquette.
He will go to battle with a starting five all averaging in double figures headed by All-American candidate Aneesah Morrow and shooting guard extraordinaire Sonya Morris with point guard Lexi Held at the controls looking to make her teammates the best they can be.
Overplay any of those three defensively and multi-talented graduate student Deja Church and sophomore Darrione Rogers will make you pay.
Morrow's week began with setting a new conference record after winning the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award for the 11th time this season, surpassing hallowed names like Maya Moore, Natalie Butler and junior Maddy Siegrist who won Player of the Week on Monday.
Just 24 hours later, Morrow was named U.S. Basketball Writers Assn. (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week even as Siegrist was selected National Player of the Week. It was the third time this season Morrow has won that award---a feat unmatched by any other player in the country.
The color pink will be on display all around Wintrust Arena during the Play4Kay game highlighting breast cancer awareness in honor of North Carolina State coach Kay Yow whose courageous battle against breast cancer inspired a nation.
The Golden Eagles had won six in a row until losses to Villanova (74-63) and UConn (72-58). They are a marked contrast to the small and speedy Blue Demons with a lineup featuring 6-2 Lauren Van Kleunen (13.7 points a game), 6-2 Liza Karlen and 6-1 Chloe Marotta consistently looking to score inside.
Anytime DePaul sealed up the paint in that first encounter, three-point specialist Lauren McLaughlin connected from long range.
