Special $1 ticket sale to come see two of the BIG EAST's best on Friday night
CHICAGO – Get ready for some long-distance launching and fancy shooting when DePaul (18-5, 10-2) and Creighton (15-6, 10-3) get after it Friday night at Wintrust Arena battling for second place in the BIG EAST behind No. 10/9 Connecticut.
Creighton coach Jim Flanery is equally enamored with the concept of three-for-one as his counterpart, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame finalist Doug Bruno.
The Bluejays are 204-of-558 from deep for an impressive 36.6 percent conversion rate. Bruno's shooters are right there with them at 200-of-572 (35 percent).
It isn't often you get two NCAA teams combining to knock down more than 400 shots from three-point land. Together, these two BIG EAST rivals have let it fly from behind the arc 1,130 times.
And best of all, this highly combustible and totally entertaining mixture of Blue Demons and Bluejays can be all yours for the mere price of $1.
There's a special flash sale going on right now until 11:59 p.m. Thursday night.
Simply visit www.DePaulBlueDemons.com/promo and type in the promo code: OFFENSE. Come watch the No. 1 offense in the country for $1. The offer is good for Friday night's game and also Sunday's game against Providence.
The most dangerous threats in the road jerseys are Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly who have each surpassed the 50 mark in three-pointers. Jensen finds the target a scary (if you're a DePaul partisan) 44.8 percent of the time while Maly connects 35 percent of the time.
And just like the Blue Demons, Creighton's firepower is spread throughout the lineup. Leading scorer Emma Ronsiek (14.4 points a game) makes 36 percent of her three-pointers while Molly Mogensen is 17-of-32 for an accuracy rate of 53.1 percent.
Two of Bruno's passions characteristic of all his teams are ball movement and unselfishness. Creighton leads the nation in assists per game as the ball rarely sits in once place for very long.
The Blue Demons, of course, are more than capable of going toe-to-toe and matching shot-for-shot with the team from Omaha, Neb.
Lexi Held has hit 52 three-pointers with an accuracy rate of nearly 44 percent. Darrione Rogers is 41-of-101 (40.6 percent). Sonya Morris and Deja Church have combined for 55 baskets behind the arc and Kierra Collier's pretty, high-arching, southpaw release from deep connects a team-leading 47.2 percent of the time.
And while every one of Creighton's eight-player rotation can hurt you, the Bluejays can't statisically match DePaul's starting five with every Blue Demon averaging in double figures.
The well-balanced firepower begins with John Wooden Award Player of the Year candidate Aneesah Morrow who is averaging nearly 21 points and 13.4 rebounds a game. While her four fellow starters along with sixth woman Collier are deadly from long range, Morrow wrecks opposing teams from the inside.
Her natural strength and athleticism enhanced by instinct you can't teach are the reasons the 6-foot, 1-inch power forward hauled down a record-breaking 27 rebounds last Sunday in a win at Seton Hall.
It's her own brand of basketball hunger feeding off the missed shots of her teammates. It's no wonder Morrow leads the nation in double-doubles, total rebounds, rebounds per game and offensive rebounds per game.
The leadership trio of Morris (18.6 points a game), Held (14 points, 5.8 assists) and Church (13.5 points) take full advantage of Morrow's battling in the blocks. All three can score in a myriad of ways while happily sharing the ball with one another. There's also Rogers who is averaging 10 points a game.
Held had been a career-long two-guard with a picture-perfect shooting stroke and clever moves driving to the rim. This season, the point guard from Kentucky has embraced a new role sacrificing individual scoring as the primary facilitator who makes her teammates better.
That's not an easy switch when you've spent your entire basketball career fine-tuning your scorer's mentality. But she is a major reason why her team leads the nation in scoring (91.2 points a game) and assists.
The high-powered attack and immensely entertaining style of play nicknamed "DePaulball" has caught the eye of none other than the nationally acclaimed Sports Illustrated which is working on a big feature for next week.
And with a special $1 ticket rate that ends at 11:59 p.m. Thursday night, DePaul vs. Creighton is the best bargain in town.
