Look to get back on winning track against Providence at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – Redemption time is at hand for coach Doug Bruno and his Blue Demons.
After missing out on an opportunity to take control of the second spot in the BIG EAST standings behind No. 10/9 Connecticut, DePaul (18-6, 10-3 BIG EAST) is tasked with returning to form Sunday against a dangerous Providence ballclub that nearly pulled off an upset of Marquette Friday night in Milwaukee.
The Blue Demons have put up a 'W' after every loss this season, making sure the disappointment they felt was one-and-done.
There's no reason that shouldn't be the case once again on Sunday.
They will step onto the Wintrust Arena court recalling the 98-77 victory Jan. 7 in Rhode Island when Deja Church led her team with 20 points. Sonya Morris delivered 19 points and seven rebounds, Aneesah Morrow 17 points and 10 rebounds, Lexi Held 17 points and eight assists.
In addition, they outrebounded the taller Friars featuring 6-4 Alyssa Geary and 6-3 Mary Baskerville by a 42-31 margin.
Each of Bruno's players will be fully cognizant that last month's 21-point road triumph took place with Providence's best player sidelined.
Well, the explosive Michigan State transfer Janai Crooms who played her first two years at Ohio State is back and as dangerous as ever. She was at her best just last week scoring 27 points in an eight-point loss to UConn.
Crooms leads the Friars (9-12, 4-8) in five categories including points (14 a game), rebounds (8.5) and assists (nearly four a game).
Together with talented freshman Kylee Sheppard (11.7 points a game), Providence has a formidable backcourt to accompany the inside strength of Baskerville and Geary. Back in January, Sheppard led the Friars with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
Morrow (20.9 points and 13.4 rebounds a game) will do her best to neutralize the Providence's twin bigs down low. The 4G backcourt of Sonya Morris (18.3 points a game), Lexi Held (14.1 points, 5.7 assists), Deja Church (13.7 points) and Darrione Rogers 9.7 points) will attack from all angles while also supporting Morrow on the rebounding front.
DePaul continues to lead the nation in points and assists while Morrow tops the entire country in double-doubles, rebounds, rebounds per game and offensive rebounds per game. The 6-1 freshman is also second in field goals, third in points and fifth in steals.
Morris is No. 3 in the country in field goals and ninth in points. Held is fourth in the nation in assists and Church is No. 12 in free throw percentage.
