Blue Demons close out trip to Montana with 3-1 mark
MISSOULA, Mont. — DePaul closed out its weekend at the Montana Invitational with a 7-4 victory over Seattle on Sunday afternoon at Grizzly Softball Field.
The Blue Demons poured in three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to beat the Redhawks after falling short in yesterday's matchup with Western Athletic Conference preseason favorites.
Junior designated player Tori Meyer had quite the outing with two hits and four RBI to lead the Blue Demons offense. Sophomore outfielder Nicole Sullivan totaled two hits and drove in a run while Brooke Johnson hit her sixth home run of the season.
Graduate pitcher Natalie Halvorson improved to 4-3 on the season with 5.1 innings of work allowing three runs while striking out two batters.
DePaul (10-12) started the scoring early with Johnson sending a home run over the center field wall in the bottom half of the first inning.
The third inning saw the Blue Demons add three runs on five hits. Zoie Rettig continued her hot streak with a leadoff triple. Rettig was tagged out at home on a Maranda Gutierrez fielder's choice before Skylor Hilger reached on a single to the pitcher. Johnson drew a walk to load the bases and Meyer sent a single through the left side to plate Gutierrez and Hilger. At the next at bat, Sullivan sent a single to left center to load the bases once more. Freshman Anna Wohlers knocked a single up the middle to score Johnson and extend the DePaul lead to 4-0.
The Blue Demons extended their advantage to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Riley Pool reached on a leadoff walk and was advanced to third on a Gutierrez double to right center.Johnson walked for the second time in as many at bats to load the bases. Meyer ripped a single to the right field line to bring home Gutierrez and Pool. Sullivan followed up with a double to left field bring Johnson around to score the seventh run of the game.
Seattle (14-11) scored two runs on three hits in the fifth inning and followed up with a run in both the sixth and seventh innings but it was too little too late as the Blue Demon pitching staff limited the production.
DePaul returns to action at Cacciatore Stadium for the first time this season March 18-20 for a BIG EAST series against Butler.
