Blue Demons Erupt For 9-1 Win Over Villanova

DePaul takes game one in crucial BIG EAST series with the Wildcats
CHICAGO — The bats were firing on all cylinders on Friday afternoon in a 9-1 victory for DePaul over Villanova at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons totaled 12 hits and surrendered just five en route to their second BIG EAST victory on the season.
Seven different Blue Demons tallied at least a hit with Maranda Gutierrez, Kate Polucha, Nicole Sullivan and Anna Wohlers recording multi-hit outings.
Wohlers went 3-for-3 in the win and combined with Baylee Cosgrove and Riley Pool to drive in seven runs on the afternoon.
Erin Hocker threw five innings and allowed just one extra base hit and one earned run.
The Blue Demons hung a run on the board first after Brooke Johnson reached on a double to right center before Polucha drove her across the plate with an RBI-single to right field.
Villanova (14-18, 3-3 BIG EAST) responded with a two-out home run to left field from Ryan Henry to knot the score at one apiece.
DePaul (12-17, 2-5) put up a four spot in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Tori Meyer was hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot before Wohlers singled to center field. A Pool double to center pushed Wohlers to third and scored Meyer before Cosgrove came to bat and cleared the bases with a home run to left field.
The third inning saw the Blue Demons add a pair of runs to take a 7-1 advantage. Pool pushed Sullivan across on fielder's choice before a Wildcats throwing error brought Meyer home from second.
In what would be the final inning of the game, Sullivan sent a double to left field before Wohlers looped a ball over the right field wall to put DePaul on top 9-1 and hand the Blue Demons the run rule victory.
The Blue Demons will resume the series with the Wildcats with game two on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT from Cacciatore Stadium. The series finale is set for Sunday at 12 p.m.
