Blue Demons give BIG EAST power closest match in nearly two months
QUEENS VILLAGE, N.Y. – DePaul went against what could well be the early favorite for the BIG EAST title Sunday at the Alley Pond Tennis Center.
The Blue Demons (7-7) wound up giving St. John's its closest match in almost two months during a 5-2 setback.
St. John's (15-5) has won 10 in a row by a combined score of 57-7. The Red Storm is 6-0 against BIG EAST competition including a 7-0 sweep of Seton Hall and 6-1 victories over Georgetown, Connecticut, Villanova and Marquette during its winning streak.
DePaul fell behind 1-0 at the outset after losing the doubles point. Hristina Djokic and Marija Jovicic went to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6(3-0) at No. 2 doubles.
Jovicic bounced back to even the scoreboard at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lalita Devarakonda at No. 2 singles.
The Red Storm had coach Marisa Arce's team on the brink of disappointment after winning the next two singles matches.
Not so fast said DePaul No. 1 Yuliya Kizelbasheva who staved off any St. John's clinching by topping Mouna Bouzgarrou 6-3, 6-3.
The home team won the final two matches although Maddie Yergler took her No. 6 singles showdown into a third set.
The Blue Demons finish off the regular season on Saturday as the opener of a DePaul-Xavier tennis doubleheader at XS Tennis. Arce & Co. are set for an 11:15 a.m. first serve with the men's teams squaring off at 3:30 p.m.
