Trio of Blue Demons Claim BIG EAST Weekly Honors

Johnson, Alvers, and Hocker earn conference recognition after 4-0 week
CHICAGO — After a week which saw the DePaul go 4-0 and put up 51 runs on 52 hits, three Blue Demons picked up BIG EAST weekly honors as announced by the league on Monday afternoon. Junior first baseman Brooke Johnson earned her first Player of the Week certificate of the spring campaign while freshman infielder Carly Alvers was named Freshman of the Week for the first time in her young career. Senior pitcher Erin Hocker landed on the Weekly Honor Roll after a 2-0 week.
Johnson had quite the week behind the plate, batting .571 on the week and turning it up to go .666 in the three-game sweep of Georgetown. The Chino Hills, Calif. native totaled eight hits five of which went for an extra base. Johnson drove in 12 RBI in the four-win week including 10 over the weekend on a pair of home runs, one of which was a grand slam. The junior first baseman reached base at a .625 clip and leads the BIG EAST in home runs with 13, RBI with 47 and total bases with 106.
Alvers had a breakout week for the Blue Demons going 7-for-12 to bat .583 and reach base at a .615 mark. The Mokena, Ill. native drove in three runs in DePaul's 11-8 comeback win over Northern Illinois on Wednesday. In Saturday's game two against Georgetown, Alvers went 2-for-3 including a pair of home runs in the third inning to drive in five runs. On the week, Alvers collected 15 total bases, 10 RBI while scoring five runs.
Hocker picked up her first weekly nod after a stellar week in the circle. The senior from Great Falls, Mont. went six innings in Saturday's 10-2 series opening win over Georgetown allowing just four hits and two earned runs. In three innings of relief against Northern Illinois, Hocker allowed two runs on four hits to pick up the win. The right hander is now 7-7 on the season and owns a 3.68 ERA.
The Blue Demons return to action on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup with Illinois at Cacciatore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with coverage on FloSoftball.
