Blue Demons dig early hole in postseason elimination game
ROSEMONT, Ill. — DePaul fell behind early and could not mount a rally in a 6-2 setback to top-seeded Connecticut in Friday's elimination game at the 2022 BIG EAST Championship at the Ballpark at Rosemont.
The Blue Demons surrendered six runs in the top of the first inning on seven walks, a pair of RBI-singles and a sacrifice fly and could not muster a comeback with their backs against the wall.
Senior Erin Hocker pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing all six earned runs while sophomore right-hander Julyana Gomez went 6 and a third inning with four strikeouts, six hits and zero runs crossing the plate.
DePaul (29-24) would not be shutout however as Brooke Johnson and Anna Wohlers each notched an RBI in the third inning to cut into the deficit.
The fifth inning would provide another good chance for DePaul as Maranda Gutierrez would draw a leadoff walk before advancing on a wild pitch. Johnson was intentionally walked and neither would advance as consecutive infield pop ups would end the inning.
Looking for runs in the seventh, Johnson would reach base for the fourth time with a walk but that would be it.
Friday marked the end of the road for the stellar class of 2022 including Erin Hocker, Kate Polucha, Maranda Gutierrez and Skylor Hilger. DePaul closed out the season 29-24 and 16-8 in BIG EAST action while making the program's 16th-consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Championship.
