DePaul Women's Soccer Falls Short to Northwestern in the Second Half
CHICAGO— Northwestern (3-1-1) overcame DePaul (1-3) in a 3-1 decision on Thursday, September 1, at Wish Field. DePaul started off the game with an early goal from Freya Jupp, giving the Blue Demons the lead in the first half. However, the home team could not keep Northwestern at bay and ended up falling 1-3 by the end 90 minutes.
The two Chicago programs started off strong, but DePaul's freshman forward Freya Jupp, was able to break Northwestern's back line and score her first career goal in the 3rd minute. The goal put DePaul in the lead and ignited the energy on the field. The Blue Demons couldn't help but feed off Jupp's excitement. Defenders, Sydney Parker, and Olivia Beam were unstoppable fending off the Wildcats numerous chances. Northwestern was able to take five shots on goal, but all five were saved by goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson, who played an incredible game, making a career-high 13 saves. Susie Soderstrom and Kristin Boos joined Jupp in an aggressive attack on offense attempting shots in the 12th and 13th minutes. The Blue Demons controlled the pace for much of the first half before Northwestern took over as the aggressor in the second half.
DePaul was determined to keep the momentum going but fell short when Northwestern scored in the 49th minute of the match. Northwestern continued to push DePaul's defense, putting up a total of 19 shots in the second half. Eriksson fought back in the box, saving 8 shots, making her total saves for the game 13, a new season high. Northwestern connected with the net again in the 76th minute to take the lead. DePaul tried to regain control of the attacking third, but the Wildcats remained focused on defending their home turf. Northwestern's final goal of the game was a header into the back of the net in the 87th minute.
