DePaul opens three-match BIG EAST homestand with Bulldogs on Friday night at 7 p.m.
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball is set to take on the Butler Bulldogs at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. The match will stream on FloSports and serve as the conference opener for Butler while it will be the second league match for the Blue Demons.
The Bulldogs enter the weekend 6-6 in non-conference action after starting the season 4-0. DePaul is 4-9 on the 2022 campaign and 0-1 in BIG EAST action.
Scouting Butler: Butler's Mariah Grunze leads the offensive attack with 3.52 kills per set while Megan Sheridan and Amina Shackleford are averaging 2.70 and 2.67 kills per set, respectively. The Bulldogs are aggressors at the net, leading the BIG EAST in blocks per set at 2.31. Jaymeson Kinley, reigning BIG EAST Libero of the Year is averaging 4.95 digs per set through 12 matches this season. Sharon Clark is in her 23rd season as the leader of the Bulldogs and in her 30th season as a head coach.
Series Stuff: Butler leads the overall series between the two programs 20-12 but the Blue Demons have taken the last three meetings including a 3-1 victory on Nov. 12, 2021 at Hinkle Fieldhouse when Hanna Karl led DePaul with 16 kills and 11 digs.
Demon Doings:Â DePaul is coming off a 3-0 setback at No. 19 Marquette on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Al McGuire center. The BIG EAST opener saw the Blue Demons hit just .155 while the Golden Eagles hit a blistering .405 led by Audrey Hamilton and Hattie Bray.
DePaul returns a strong core of starters from last year's BIG EAST Tournament team including Jill Pressly, Rachel Krasowski, Bailey Nelson and Hanna Karl who will provide the spark for the Blue Demons. Pressly, an All-BIG EAST Team selection last season and a preseason pick in 2022, leads DePaul's attack with 3.56 kills per set to rank third in the conference to go along with six double-doubles through 12 matches.  Libero Rachel Krasowski is third in the league in total digs with 251 while her 4.92 digs per set. At the net, Aly Kindelberger has picked up the defensive mantle, totaling 1.14 blocks per set to land fourth in the BIG EAST. Zidek is in her fifth season at the helm of the Blue Demons program.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Butler will be a good test for us in how well we can protect our ability to get extended swings and transition from defense to offense. They have a great libero in Jaymeson Kinley who does not give up kills lightly. We will rely on a full team effort to have a strong home stand in our BIG EAST home opener vs a Butler team that always challenges us to go the distance."
Up Next: Following Friday's match, DePaul will continue its homestand with matches against Providence and Connecticut, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1.
