
Blue Demons Drop Four-Set Match to Butler

Underwood's career-high 17 kills leads DePaul attack
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball fell 3-1 to Butler on Friday night in the BIG EAST home opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Set scores of the match were: 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 20-25.
DePaul (4-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) was led by Taylor Underwood's career-high 17 kills while Aly Kindelberger totaled 10 kills at a .400 clip.
Outside hitters Hanna Karl and Jill Pressly each notched eight kills while collecting 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
Rachel Krasowski picked up 29 digs and recorded eight assists, while Maggie Jones dished out 35 assists and grabbed a season-high 17 digs.
Butler (7-6, 1-0) was led by 22 kills from Amina Shackelford.
Set One: Back-to-back service aces put the Blue Demons in front 11-8. A 4-0 scoring run from the Bulldogs tied the score at 15 before Nelson terminated on the right-side for the quick side-out. Butler continued their response to take an 18-16 advantage and force a DePaul timeout. Underwood dropped a ball in down the line for her fourth kill of the set to knot the score at 20. Â A Katelynn Oxley kill fended off a Butler set point before a cross-court kill gave the Bulldogs the first set, 25-23. Â
Set Two: The Bulldogs took a 9-5 advantage early in the second set before a 3-0 run for DePaul cut the deficit to just one. The Blue Demons utilized a 3-0 run of their own with kills from Oxley and Underwood to even the score at 16 apiece. Butler surged to take a 20-17 lead. Underwood's 11th kill of the match kept the DePaul hopes alive
Set Three: DePaul came out on a tear in the third set, using a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead. A Krasowski service ace widened the lead to eight before a solo stuff from Pressly gave the Blue Demons a 16-7 advantage to force Butler into using their final timeout of the set. Butler used a 6-3 run to claw back into the set trailing, 20-16. Â
Set Four: Long rallies characterized the early going of the fourth set. Butler used a three-point spurt to take a 12-11 lead. The squads traded side-outs with Karl's seventh kill of the match tying the set at 19. Butler took control of the set with a 6-1 run to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will take a week off before continuing their homestand when Providence and UConn descend upon McGrath-Phillips Arena, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1
