Blue Demons Complete First Tournament of Season

Antonijevic and Martin go undefeated in singles play
TOLEDO, Ohio - The DePaul women's tennis team wrapped up their first fall tournament on Saturday when they closed out the Toledo Rocket Invite. The Blue Demons combined for a 18-12 record over the two days of competition.Â
"I'm very proud of the fight the girls showed this weekend," said head coach Marisa Arce. "We've worked a lot on doubles the past couple of weeks, and to win all 3 doubles points took a full team effort and was definitely a high point of the weekend. #2 and #3 doubles were disciplined on the controllables and their coachability which led them to be undefeated on the weekend."
The day began with doubles competitions where Maddie Yergler played alongside Shalini Tallamraju from Toledo and picked up a win against the University of Chicago.Â
Doubles play continued for the Blue Demons when they took on UIC and earned two wins from Mayya Perova/ Greta Carbone and Valentina Martin/ Eleanor Nobbs, while Lenka Antonijevic and Hannah Smith fell to UIC's Jover/ Gustafsson.
DePaul finished doubles play when they took on the hosting Rockets. Antonijevic and Smith fell in their second straight doubles matchup, but Perova/ Carbone and Martin/ Nobbs were able to grab the final doubles wins for the Blue Demons.
The final event of the day for DePaul was singles matchups between the Blue Demons and the Rockets. Toledo swept the Blue Singles event from the Blue Demons, but Antonijevic and Martin were able to secure wins in the Gold Singles to go undefeated in the event for the weekend.
"Lenka and Valen both going undefeated in singles was due to the heart they showed and the work they've put in on fitness," said Arce. "We have a clear plan for what we need to improve and I'm excited to get back to campus and get to work."
UP NEXT: The women's tennis team will head to two different tournaments next weekend. Some members will travel to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Invite, while other members will head to Cary N.C. for the ITA All Americans Tournament.Â
