DePaul Drops New Years Day Contest Against Providence

CHICAGO – The DePaul men's basketball team dropped a New Year's Day contest, 74-59, against Providence Sunday afternoon inside Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons were led by Da'Sean Nelson who tallied 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Javan Johnson and Umoja Gibson added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for DePaul (7-8, 1-3 BIG EAST). Gibson was 8-of-9 from the free throw line, marking his second-straight game with eight or more made free throws.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Providence (12-3, 4-0 BIG EAST) opened up to an early 13-4 lead that DePaul eventually brought to a single-possession following back-to-back three-pointers from Nelson and Jalen Terry. Providence, however, had an answer for every Blue Demon run. The Friars fired off a 10-2 run, hanging onto a 10-point lead, 22-12.
Providence ultimately took a 15-point lead into halftime which proved to be the difference maker as the two teams were equal in the second half with 36 apiece.

- DePaul forced a season-high turnover number from its opponent for the third-straight game. DePaul has forced 15 or more turnovers from its opponent six times this season.
- Sunday marked the 50th double-digit scoring game of Johnson's career.
- Yor Anei tied a career-high five steals while contributing three blocks, his most since his return from injury.
- Terry had a season-high six rebounds.
- Philmon Gebrewhit was perfect from the free-throw line for the third time this season.
- Gebrewhit dished out a 2022-23 season best three assists.
- It was the first time in Nelson's career he led the Blue Demons in scoring.
- The Blue Demons starting lineup with Gibson, Terry, Johnson, Eral Penn and Anei are 4-1.
