
DePaul Drops Close Contest to No. 25 Villanova 71-64

Aneesah Morrow totals 28 points and 11 rebounds in the setback
CHICAGO – Despite a comeback rally in the latter stages of the second half, DePaul dropped a 71-64 decision to No. 25 Villanova on Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons fell to 10-7 and 3-3 in BIG EAST play.

Sophomore forward Aneesah Morrow recorded 28 points in the setback to go along with 11 rebounds for her 13th double-double on the season and 40th of her career. Â

Jorie Allen added 15 points and seven rebounds for her fifth double-digit performance in 2022-23 while Anaya Peoples collected 10 rebounds and four steals.

The two sides traded baskets through the first 10 minutes with the Wildcats taking a narrow 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Blue Demons shot 50-percent from the field in the first quarter with Morrow and Allen tallying eight points apiece.

An 11-2 run midway through the second quarter opened a 31-23 advantage for the Wildcats . After a called timeout, the Blue Demons mounted an 8-2 run to narrow the deficit to 33-31 with Villanova holding a 35-31 edge at the half. Morrow had a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds through the first 20 minutes.

Villanova (15-3, 6-1 BIG EAST) opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run and later pushed their lead to 18 before DePaul closed the period with eight unanswered points to cut the deficit to 10 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Back-to-back triples from Allen and Kendall Holmes made it a two-possession ballgame which saw the Blue Demons trail 65-60 with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. The Wildcats wouldn't allow DePaul to inch any closer, as senior Maddy Siegrist scored the visitor's final six points to close out the game.

Siegrist led Villanova with 32 points and 12 rebounds.
Up Next: DePaul will hit the road for the first time in a month when the Blue Demons travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for a matchup with Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tipoff from the Cintas Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT with coverage carried on FloHoops.
