Second-Half Surge Not Enough for DePaul Against #24 UConn
1/31/2023 10:41:00 PM | MEN'S BASKETBALL
CHICAGO – A strong second-half surge from the DePaul men's basketball team was not enough to push them past No. 24/23 UConn, Tuesday night inside Wintrust Arena.
Javan Johnson led the Blue Demons with a team-best 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting followed by 16 points from Da'Sean Nelson. Umoja Gibson had a game-best eight assists on the day, accounting for over half of the team's 15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Johnson came surging out of the gate to open the game, with 12 of DePaul's first 16 points. The Blue Demons held UConn to a one-possession lead for nearly the entire half. With five minutes left in the period, UConn went on a 12-2 run for a 13-point lead that would hold through halftime.
UConn's lead remained double-digits through the first seven minutes of the second half, until DePaul's offense came alive. The Blue Demons pieced together a 15-2 run over the course of five minutes, that was sparked by K.T. Raimey's performance off the bench. After bringing the game within six points, 63-57, DePaul couldn't capitalize before UConn once again pulled away.
