DePaul returns home for three-straight home games
CHICAGO – The DePaul men's basketball team is set to welcome Villanova into Wintrust Arena Tuesday, Jan. 10. The matchup is slated for an 8 p.m. tip on CBSSN with Tom McCarthy and Steve Lappas on the call, and Jon Rothstein sideline reporting. Zach Zaidman and Dave Corzine will have the radio broadcast on DePaulBlueDemons.com.
The matchup features the top two free throw shooting teams in the BIG EAST. Villanova leads the country with an 85.3 percent showing at the line, while DePaul is seventh nationally at 78.9. The pair of teams also matchup behind-the-arc, both in the league's top-five three-point shooting.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
DePaul (7-9, 1-4 BIG EAST) is coming off a pair of losses to Providence and Butler, which included a closely contested battle in Indianapolis. DePaul was led in that contest by Umoja Gibson with a team-best 16 points.
Following his return from injury, Yor Anei has been settling back into the DePaul rotation. Anei recorded a season-high 14 points at Butler on 6-of-8 shooting, in addition to four rebounds and three blocks. The graduate student currently ranks sixth among all active Division 1 players in career blocks with 233.
THE SERIES
Villanova leads the all-time series, 32-8, which includes 22-straight wins against the Blue Demons. DePaul's last win against Villanova came Jan. 3, 2008 in an 84-76 home win. The Blue Demons dropped both matchups last season after not meeting in 2021.
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Villanova (8-8, 2-3 BIG EAST) is coming off an 88-80 loss to Xavier on Saturday. The Wildcats have been led this season by Kyle Neptune, who is in his first year as Villanova's head coach. Caleb Daniels leads the Villanova offense, averaging 16.7 points per game followed by Eric Dixon's 15.8.
Brandon Slater currently leads the BIG EAST, just ahead of DePaul's Gibson, and ranks eighth nationally with a 92.3 free throw percentage.
Villanova has picked up BIG EAST wins against Georgetown and St. John's, with the Georgetown win coming on the road. After struggling over Thanksgiving at the PK Invitational, the Wildcats fired off four-straight wins to open December and have been 6-3 since.
