
DePaul Makes History in Preseason Exhibition with Iowa

IOWA CITY, IOWA – In a historic preseason charity exhibition matchup, DePaul women's basketball fought to the finish against 2023 National Championship runners-up, Iowa. The Hawkeyes came away with the 94-72 victory, Sunday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium, despite DePaul putting together a late run.
DePaul and Iowa set a women's basketball attendance record with 55,646 in attendance. All net proceeds from the event benefited The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
The Blue Demons had balanced scoring efforts with eight different players scoring and three reaching double-digit points. Anaya Peoples led the Blue Demons with 19, despite playing only 25 minutes. Peoples shot 9-of-14 from the floor in addition to five rebounds and three assists. Maeve McErlane and Michelle Sidor joined Peoples in double-digit scoring with 14 and 13, respectively. McErlane, Sidor and Jorie Allen all had a team-best seven rebounds, while McErlane also tallied four assists.
DePaul opened the game to a 4-1 lead after back-to-back buckets from Peoples and Kate Clarke. Iowa moved ahead 13-6 on an 8-0 run before Clarke came up with a big three. Iowa ended the quarter ahead 24-18.
Peoples started the scoring for the Blue Demons in the second quarter with an and-one, making it a five-point game, 26-21. Iowa came out with another run of eight-straight points as DePaul called timeout. Allen broke the scoring drought with a hook shot, 34-23. After a Hawkeye three, DePaul had back-to-back buckets from Sidor and Allen. McErlane kept the Iowa lead in single-digits with a three-pointer but DePaul could not inch closer as Iowa took advantage of 26 free throw attempts in the first two periods, for a 52-37 halftime lead.
DePaul opened the third quarter shooting 2-of-4 from three-point range, including Sidor's third of the game. The Hawkeyes hot shooting proved difficult to stop with several players in foul trouble, as Iowa took an 11-0 run for a 74-46 lead.
The Blue Demons defense came out firing at the beginning of final period as they forced the Hawkeyes to miss their first 12 shots. DePaul strung together a 15-0 run, cutting Iowa's lead to 11, 77-66. The Blue Demons outscored Iowa 21-17 in the final 10 minutes.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will wrap up preseason competition on Sunday, Oct. 29 with an exhibition against Lewis. The 2023-24 season will begin on Monday, Nov. 6 when Western Michigan visits Wintrust Arena.
