Peoples leads three Blue Demons in double figures with 18 points
Coral Gables, Fla. – Despite three Blue Demons finishing in double figures and outscoring Miami in the second half, DePaul couldn't overcome a slow shooting start in a 75-70 loss to the undefeated Hurricanes on Friday night at the Watsco Center.
DePaul (5-5) shot 16-percent from the field in the first quarter and trailed by as many as 19 in the first half before roaring back to take just their second lead of the game with three minutes remaining in the contest, but it wasn't enough in the end.
Graduate guard Anaya Peoples finished with a game-high 18 points in addition to eight rebounds and three assists. Peoples has scored 18 or more points in all 10 games this season.
Michelle Sidor netted 16 points including 11 in the fourth quarter while Jorie Allen scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Allen has finished in double figures in each of DePaul's last four contests. Katlyn Gilbert recorded nine points and nine rebounds.
DePaul shot 93 percent (14-15) from the free throw line and outrebounded the lengthier Miami team by a 43-42 edge.
Miami (8-0) put five in double figures on the night led by Jasmyne Roberts with 16.
How it Happened
Allen netted the first two baskets for the visitors as the Blue Demons fell behind by a pair of possessions, 9-5, halfway through the first quarter. DePaul struggled to find the bottom of the net through the first 10 minutes, shooting 16-percent from the floor and trailing 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Peoples broke a near five-minute scoring drought for DePaul with an and-one with 7:35 remaining in the second. A trio of Miami threes in a two-minute span widened the deficit to 34-15, forcing the Blue Demons to call timeout midway through the second. Four different players scored a bucket in DePaul's 8-0 run to close the half and pull within 11, 36-25, heading into the locker room.
The Blue Demons opened the second half with a renewed sense of urgency, scoring on their first six trips down the floor and cutting the deficit to three, 42-39, at the third quarter media timeout. Gilbert converted an and-one at the basket to bring the Blue Demons within one, but Miami finished the third on a 9-1 spurt to take a 51-42 advantage into the final period.
Seven points unanswered for DePaul trimmed Miami's lead down to three once again with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter. A Peoples layup underneath on a baseline out of bounds brought the Blue Demons within one, 59-58. Sidor drained a triple to put DePaul in front, 63-62, for the first time since 8:54 in the first quarter. Miami answered with a 7-0 run to stretch the deficit back to six, but the Blue Demons did not go away easily, pulling back within a pair, 72-70, on another Sidor three with 30 seconds remaining in the game. The Hurricanes closed out the game at the free throw line to remain unbeaten.
