Blue Demons overcome late seven-point fourth quarter deficit to claim the victory
CHICAGO – In a game characterized by 18 lead changes and 11 ties, it was a late fourth quarter rally that led DePaul to a 94-89 victory over Seton Hall Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena.
The second meeting between the two programs in the last three days lived up to the billing of the first matchup -- high energy and high-octane offense, but this time the Blue Demons outscored the visiting Pirates 28-22 in the final period and saw four finish in double figures to claim the victory.
Aneesah Morrow notched her 21st double-double of the season and 48th of her career with 28 points and 15 rebounds along with three assists and three steals. Darrione Rogers totaled 26 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to record her third double-double of the season while going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Kendall Holmes added 15 points with eight coming in crunch time of the fourth quarter in addition to a 13-point, seven-assist performance from Anaya Peoples.
Keke Rimmer added a timely three late in the contest and finished with six points and a pair of assists while Jorie Allen recorded a career-high five assists to go along with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
As a team, DePaul out-rebounded the Pirates 37-30 and shot a season-high 94-percent (17-18) from the free-throw line.
The Blue Demons started the game on a 7-0 personal run from Morrow to force a Seton Hall timeout but the Pirates used an 8-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the game, 16-14. Morrow and Rogers combined for 19 of DePaul's 24 first quarter points as the Blue Demons trailed by just two, 26-24, after 10 minutes.
A Rogers basket underneath the rim put DePaul in front by a pair before the Blue Demons were held scoreless for a three-minute stretch to allow the Pirates to claim a narrow 37-34 advantage. Rimmer connected from long range for DePaul's final field goal of the half as the teams went into the locker room tied at 41.
Morrow had 13 points after 20 minutes while Rogers recorded 12 first-half points.
DePaul (14-13, 7-9 BIG EAST) opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 52-45. The Pirates scored six unanswered to come within one before Rogers hit from downtown to make it a two-possession game. The Pirates held on to a 67-66 lead into the fourth quarter.
Seton Hall (16-11, 9-8) stretched their lead to seven before DePaul used a six-point run on a Holmes three and Rogers and-one to reclaim the lead, 82-81, and never look back. After the Pirates cut the advantage to two with 30 seconds remaining, the Blue Demons converted on four of their next five free throw attempts to put the game away and avenge Monday night's loss.
