
DePaul’s Late Rally Falls Short in 67-64 Decision Against No. 15 Villanova

Blue Demons come up just short to 15th-ranked Wildcats
VILLANOVA, Pa. – DePaul cut a 14-point deficit to just one with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough in a 67-64 setback at Finneran Pavilion on Tuesday night.
After scoring just 23 points in the first half, the Blue Demons turned it up on a notch in the latter 20 minutes with Aneesah Morrow and Darrione Rogers combining for 29 of DePaul's 41 second-half points.
Morrow recorded the 50th double-double of her career and 23rd of the season with game-highs of 29 points and 19 rebounds. Rogers finished with 17 points including 15 in the second half for her 22nd game in double figures this season.
Anaya Peoples totaled 10 points with four assists and three rebounds.
In a collective rebounding effort, DePaul grabbed 50 boards for the second time this season, out-rebounding the Wildcats 50-47. Kendall Holmes tallied a career-high seven caroms and Jorie Allen brought down nine.
The teams traded baskets in the early going, with Villanova taking a 14-10 lead heading into the first media timeout. DePaul closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 16-14 edge into the second quarter.
Villanova's Maddy Siegrist scored 12 points in the first five minutes of the second period, lifting the Wildcats to a 26-20 advantage with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. The Blue Demons were held scoreless for the last 4:20 in the second and went into intermission trailing by nine, 32-23.
Morrow had 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds after 20 minutes.
The Wildcats led by as many as 19 halfway into the third quarter before a Rogers triple cut the deficit to just 12 in the final seconds of the third. DePaul trailed 56-42 after 30 minutes of play.
In the early going of the fourth DePaul forced three Villanova turnovers and turned the miscues into points as a Peoples drive to the basket trimmed Villanova's lead down to eight, 56-48, with eight and half to play. Morrow willed a basket home to bring DePaul within one, 61-60, but the Blue Demons couldn't convert down the stretch as Siegrist hit her free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
Siegrist led Villanova with 28 points and 16 rebounds.
