DePaul earns 4-2 victory over Butler
CAYCE, S.C. - The No. 2 seeded DePaul women's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over No. 7 Butler on Friday morning.
"It was a great match today versus Butler," said head coach Marisa Arce. "We really had to earn this win by taking care of controllables and playing to win. Total team effort."
In doubles play, Greta Carbone and Hannah Smith sailed to a 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court over Butler's Bruetting and Schurhamer. Lenka Antonijevic and Eleanor Nobbs fought to a 6-3 win on the No. 1 court to give the Blue Demons the early 1-0 lead.
Greta Carbone continued her strong outing in singles play when she secured the second point for DePaul in singles play. Carbone defeated Katie Beavin from Butler in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
The third point for the Blue Demons was snagged by Lenka Antonijevic in a straight set victory over Butler's Katie Beavin, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
Butler was able to cut into DePaul's lead by earning points on the No. 1 and No. 3 singles courts to make the score 3-2, but Eleanor Nobbs would grab the final point for DePaul.
Nobbs put an end to Butler's scoring as she defeated Schurhamer on the No. 2 singles court in a tiebreaker. Nobbs came away with the 7-2 win in the tiebreaker and straight set victory to earn the decisive fourth point for the Blue Demons.
UP NEXT: DePaul will take on the No. 3 seed Creighton at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday, April 22, after Creighton earned a 4-2 win over No. 6 UConn on Friday morning.
The Blue Demons won their lone matchup with the Bluejays earlier this season in Omaha, Neb., 5-2. Creighton finished the regular season with a 15-7 overall record and 4-2 record in BIG EAST play.
