Pair of second half goals burns Blue Demons against 10th-ranked Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite a lopsided margin in shots and shots on goal, the Blue Demons hung tough against one of the nation's best on Tuesday night, falling in a 2-0 decision at No. 10 Indiana.
Senior goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz was the bright spot for the Blue Demons, making seven saves on Indiana's nine quality chances.
The Hoosiers proved to be the aggressors in the early going, notching 15 shots including three on frame in the first half. Cruz and the back line held strong, keeping IU at bay and heading into the intermission tied, 0-0.
DePaul (1-1) came out of the locker room and set the tone early in the second stanza, pushing pace in the offensive third and earning their first look on cage on a Colin Mackey header.
Indiana (1-0-1) retaliated and eventually found the back of the net in the 67th minute off the boot of freshman Collins Oduro. The Hoosiers added on in the 76th minute with a rip outside of the box from Quinten Helmer to make it 2-0.
Time was not on the side of the Blue Demons, as the visitors ran out of runway to break through.
Up Next: The Blue Demons return home to Wish Field for a pair of matches this weekend beginning with a matchup against Bradley on Friday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m. Less than 72 hours later, DePaul will welcome in Northwestern for a non-conference clash on Sept. 4 with kick off set for 2 p.m.
