Blue Demons host Loyola on Tuesday at Wish Field
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Not much went the way of the Blue Demons on Friday evening, as DePaul dropped a 4-1 decision to Xavier in the BIG EAST opener at Corcoran Field.
The Musketeers scored a pair of goals in each half and outnumbered the Blue Demons 19-5 in shots to take the victory.
DePaul (1-3-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) appeared to control the pace in the early going, earning the first corner of the match and firing off a pair of headers on the opportunity before Xavier took command.
The chances mounted quickly for the Musketeers, as the hosts launched three shots on goal in the span of three minutes all of which were swallowed up by DePaul goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz.
Xavier (3-2-1, 1-0) broke through in the 24th minute off a corner kick sent to the back post and finding the head of Taylor Rhinehart to break the stalemate. Nearly a minute later, the Musketeers doubled up on a defensive breakdown in transition allowing Jerome Jolly to find the back of the net.
As time winded down in the first half, DePaul found themselves on the board after a Noeh Hernandez free kick from just outside the box trickled in the cage off the head of a Xavier midfielder.
After 45 minutes, DePaul trailed 2-1.
In the 47th minute, Xavier earned a free kick and converted to push their advantage to 3-1. In the aftermath, DePaul's Kristian Malinich was issued a red card, forcing the Blue Demons to play a man-down for the remainder of the contest.
The Musketeers connected once more in the 65th on a cross and finish from five yards out to put the game out of reach.
Cruz matched his career-high with nine saves on the evening, while offensively, Hernandez tallied a pair of shots including one on frame.
