DePaul falls in first conference match of the season
CHICAGO - DePaul volleyball dropped a three-set match to Georgetown (20-25, 17-25, 17-25) on Friday night.
DePaul (7-5) was led by Jill Pressly with 15 kills and nine digs. Bailey Nelson followed behind with eight terminations while Rachel Krasowski and Julia Nagy tallied 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Ashley Cudiamat led the way with 26 assists on the night. Four different Blue Demons recorded a service ace, including Sierra Ellison who saw her first action of the season on Friday.
"Congrats to Georgetown. Tough lesson for us, and we are certainly disappointed in our play," said head coach Marie Zidek. "Typical things that have been going well that absolutely needed to show up versus them: serve, pass, out of system management…did not come to play. If we can feel good and be super lively after a win, we also need to be able to look each other in the eyes during a loss and accept responsibility without blame, excuses or negativity. And that might be the greatest lesson we learn this evening. It's an 18 match battle for conference. This is a lesson not a loss. Tomorrow we get another shot."
Georgetown (10-3) was led by Grace Albaugh with 11 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: DePaul found themselves in an 11-5 hole during the first set, but were able to go on a 9-1 surge to take a two point lead. The Hoyas went on a run of their own, including three blocks that ended the first set.
SET TWO: DePaul surged to a 6-3 lead behind multiple kills from Pressly and Nelson. The Hoyas struck back and tied the match at 7 a piece. A large Hoyas run put the visitors up, 10-14. Errors from Georgetown and a kill from Audrey Klemp kept the match within a few points, but the Hoyas took the set win behind a 6-1 run.
SET THREE: Early errors from both teams kept the score close. A 4-0 run by the Hoyas pushed the visitors ahead, 9-3. The Blue Demons gathered three straight points behind a service ace and kills from Pressly, but the Hoyas kept the pressure up and took the match win on a 3-0 run.
