CHICAGO — DePaul men's soccer fell behind early before rallying to shift the momentum late, but it was Creighton who claimed a 2-1 decision at Wish Field on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman forward Liam Mullins proved to be the aggressor for the Blue Demons, leading the squad with five shots while netting the first goal of his collegiate career in the 80th minute to cut the deficit to a one late in the match.
Goalkeeper Ghandi Cruz made four crucial saves while enduring the advances of 31 Creighton shots on the afternoon.
DePaul (1-5-2, 0-2) started the match pressuring early, with Mullins immediately getting a shot off in the first 30 seconds of play after drawing out Creighton's keeper.
The Bluejays didn't waste time however, racking up seven shots in the first 15 minutes of play. The Blue Demon defensive line, led by Cruz, kept Creighton from gaining any ground.
Continuing to press, Creighton (3-3-3, 2-0) broke through first, scoring in the 20th minute off a shot from the left side after the previous shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
The two sides traded possession for the remainder of the half with the Bluejays, outmatching the Blue Demons in shots 19-5 in the first half.
Clagette didn't let the Blue Demons go quietly into halftime though, firing off a laser from outside the box that was corralled by Creighton's keeper.
The Blue Demons started the second half with increased pressure, but tides quickly changed in the Bluejays' favor. Dominating the possession, Creighton doubled their lead in the 65th minute with a shot converted from deep inside the box.
DePaul brought the game back within one in the 80th minute when Creighton turned over a goal kick to Clagette in the midfield who provided service into Liam Mullins on the right side of the box, who buried it in the lower left corner.
Looking for the equalizer, Kristian Malinich sent a ball on frame in the 86th minute that was redirected by the Bluejays. The Blue Demons saw a couple more chances in the box in the 87th but could not connect as time ticked away and Creighton hung on for the victory.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will travel to Providence, R.I. on Friday, Sept. 29 to take on the Friars. Kick off is slated for 6 p.m. CT with coverage on FloFC.
