Cudiamat hits 1,000 career assists on Thursday night
CHICAGO - DePaul volleyball earned a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-23, 25-13) over the Northern Illinois Huskies in the team's 2023 home opener, Thursday night.
DePaul (3-3) was led by Audrey Klemp and Jill Pressly, who each totaled 12 kills on the night. Klemp finished the night with a hitting percentage of .611 while Pressly added nine digs.
Junior setter Ashley Cudiamat tallied her 1,000th career assist in the second set of tonight's match. Cudiamat earned 18 total assists on the night and contributed four digs.Â
Two freshmen made big home court debuts, as Meghan Scholz tallied six blocks to go along with six kills and Nora Mannion had nine digs in the match. Sophomore Grace Brooker had four kills on the night while Katelynn Oxley and Bailey Nelson each tallied three kills in the first match of the weekend.
"Heck of a showing for our block tonight," said head coach Marie Zidek. "We asked our middles to win their match ups middle to out and they did that especially when the game found the left in transition. Another key contribution by our role players and a nice spark off the bench by Grace Brooker. We have to continue to use every match opportunity as a lesson and then go back and test our learning in training. Great team win and we look forward to St. Thomas tomorrow."
Northern Illinois (1-6) was led by three players who had nine killls each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The first three DePaul points of the match came off of kills from Klemp. A 12-3 run quickly put the Blue Demons in front, 18-11. A late surge by the Huskies put NIU team within four, but a service error from Northern Illinois gave the Blue Demons the set. Throughout the first set, Klemp owned a .500 hitting percentage, while Pressly was right behind hitting .400.
SET TWO: A 4-0 serving run with Krasowski behind the line gave the Blue Demons an early 8-5 lead. Back-and-forth action between both sides saw the Huskies even the match at 10, before DePaul pulled away with three-straight points including a block from Brooker and Nelson. Another Klemp kill and series of Huskies errors clinched DePaul's fourth-straight set win.Â
SET THREE: The Blue Demons hit a blistering .750 percentage during the first 10 points of the match, going up 7-3 early. Scholz's fourth block of the night pushed DePaul's lead to six, 10-4. A second 4-0 serving run of the night behind Krasowski, extended DePaul's lead further as it reached its largest of the night, 13-4. Brooker and Pressly ended the match with three-straight points for DePaul.
