Decisive Fourth Quarter Powers DePaul Past Lewis in Exhibition Victory

Jorie Allen posts double-double in the win
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball outscored Lewis 22-2 in the fourth quarter to earn an 83-41 exhibition victory at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Friday night.
Graduate forward Jorie Allen finished with a game-high 19 points in addition to 13 rebounds to record a double-double. Allen shot 53-percent from the field after converting on four of her first five field goal attempts.
Meg Newman, making her DePaul debut, went 5-for-6 from the field for 12 points in addition to grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out a team-best five assists. Junior guard Kate Clarke posted 12 points of her own.
In a game that saw all 15 active Blue Demons earn time on the court 12 of them entered the scoresheet including freshmen Emory Klatt (six points), Alayna West (five points) and Angelina Smith (two points.) Klatt added four boards in her collegiate debut.
The Blue Demons dominated the paint 42-14 while also turning 20 Flyer miscues into 30 points.
In a physical affair, the two teams combined for 54 fouls and 58 free throw attempts.
Taylor Gugliuzza netted a game-high 15 points for Lewis.
How it Happened
After Lewis knotted the score 2-2, the Blue Demons used a 13-0 run to create separation for good. Allen imposed her will from the start, netting nine points in a four-minute span. After the first quarter, DePaul held a 24-7 advantage.
Six different Blue Demons recorded a field goal in a back-and-forth second quarter. A pair of free throws from Taylor Johnson-Matthews with just under a minute remaining in the first half gave DePaul a 38-19 lead heading into halftime.
A 6-0 spurt in the third quarter earned DePaul its largest lead of the game, 46-24 on a West drive to the basket. The Flyers connected on a layup with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third, but a turnaround jumper from Shakara McCline put DePaul in front 61-39 heading into the final period.
The Blue Demons saw eight different scorers connect from the field in the fourth quarter while stepping up the defensive pressure and limiting the Flyers to a pair of points in the period to secure the victory.
