Saeger adds tenth career double-double in win
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball defeated the Connecticut Huskies 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 26-28, 25-22) Sunday afternoon, earning their third perfect week in BIG EAST play. The Blue Demons improve to 7-3 in conference matches, and 15-7 overall. The Huskies fall to 6-4 in BIG EAST action, and 18-4 on the season.
Outside hitter Jill Pressly paced the Blue Demon offense with 17 kills and 15 digs, achieving her eleventh double-double of 2024. Audrey Klemp and Aly Kindelberger each poured in 11 kills, with Kindelberger registering a team-high six blocks, her fifth match of the season with five or more.
Freshman setter Amanda Saeger contributed 21 assists and 17 digs for her tenth career double-double, while fellow setter Ashley Cudiamat posted 20 assists and nine digs of her own.
Libero Rachel Krasowski held down the DePaul defense with 19 digs.
"Another gritty win," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"It's late October, and our leadership is really starting to show. It's also showing how hard this core of players worked in the off-season. Players that put in the work are looking strong and able to hold higher levels of their game for longer while still adding to it. After the first set, nothing in that match came easy, and our leaders stepped up and held space long enough for us to find a way through. We were able to hold their pins to below .100 attack efficiency, and that allowed us just enough space to clinch when we needed to. It was a heck of a competitive afternoon, and we look forward to another week of training in preparation for two more match opportunities at home."
The Huskies were led by 14 kills from outside hitter Hannah Tylska.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The set opened with a service ace from Mannion, quickly followed by two more from Kindelberger. Two kills each from Pressly and sophomore Meghan Scholz put the Blue Demons in front by nine and they never looked back, as five different players recorded points for DePaul. Three consecutive errors closed the set, 25-13, in favor of the Blue Demons.
SET TWO
Four quick kills from Klemp and Pressly put the Blue Demons ahead by three, 5-2, and Krasowski proceeded to earn consecutive service aces to extend the DePaul lead to six. The Huskies tied the set at 16, led by three kills from freshman Anna Herman, but two more kills each from Klemp and Pressly earned DePaul the set, 25-23.
SET THREE
The teams traded points the whole way through, with neither side amassing more than a two-point lead. Five kills from Pressly and four from Kindelberger were not enough, as consecutive Blue Demon attack errors closed the set win for the Huskies, 28-26.
SET FOUR
The Blue Demons jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, after three consecutive UConn attack errors. The Huskies remained strong to come within one point, but kills from Klemp, Kindelberger, and sophomore Yagmur Yavuz put the Blue Demon lead back at five points. Tylska tallied three more kills for UConn mid-set, but DePaul did not let off the gas, with three kills from both Kindelberger and Pressly sealing the Blue Demon set victory, 25-23.
