Pressly reaches third on DePaul all-time kills list
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball defeated Seton Hall 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-13) Friday evening, earning their third consecutive win in conference play. The Blue Demons improve to 16-7 overall, and 8-3 in BIG EAST matches.
Offensively, DePaul was paced by outside hitter Jill Pressly, who posted 22 kills to reach third place on the all-time kills list for DePaul volleyball. The Plano, Texas native also added 16 digs for her 12th double-double of the year. Graduate student Audrey Klemp tallied her sixth match of the last seven in double-figures, contributing 14 kills. Freshman Luisa Juncu had a standout match for the Blue Demons, registering a career-high 11 kills.
Freshman setter Amanda Saeger was one assist shy of her career-high, pouring in 30, while fellow setter Ashley Cudiamat tallied 20 assists of her own.
Libero Rachel Krasowski extends her streak to 14 matches in double-figure digs, guiding the DePaul defense with 24 on the night.
"We entered this match knowing we would have to do three things," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"Firstly, lean into the foundations of our game. Seton Hall is always a stubborn defensive team, and their arms can create for them. We needed to win the out-of-system game, serve and pass game, and the broken plays at the net. Second, we needed to show that we improved in October. Teams either put it on coast or they try to shoot the gap in their own improvement. This also applies to bench players being ready to step into the match and impact it. Luisa [Juncu] did a phenomenal job of that today and she is proof that you never know when your number is going to be called to help the team win. Today was her day. Third, we needed to show a strong team. Every match matters a little bit more as we push for post-season, and every team independent of record is making one last big four-week push. Proud moment tonight for the team. We're excited for Sunday."
Seton Hall was led by graduate student Perri Lucas and sophomore Senna Roberts-Navarro with 12 kills each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The Blue Demons jumped out to an early lead with kills from Kindelberger, Pressly, and sophomore Meghan Scholz, but two DePaul errors allowed the Pirates to tie the set at six. Additional kills from Klemp and Oxley again gave the Blue Demons a narrow lead, which they retained until Seton Hall knotted the set at 14. The teams swapped points late, until two kills from Lucas gave the Pirates the set win, 25-23.
SET TWO
Five different Blue Demons posted kills to open with a 7-2 lead, but three DePaul errors propelled the Pirates to even the set at eight. Three consecutive Juncu kills pushed the Blue Demons in front yet again, and they never looked back. Klemp and Pressly traded kills to earn the last five points and the set for DePaul, 25-13.
SET THREE
Two rapid kills from Pressly gave DePaul the early advantage, and they retained their lead the rest of the set. The Pirates came within one, but consecutive Scholz kills kept the Blue Demons in front. Despite four late attack errors, Pressly closed the set victory with a kill, 25-22 in favor of DePaul.
SET FOUR
The teams swapped points to begin the set, until kills from Juncu and Scholz gave DePaul a two-point lead. Two more kills from Klemp and three from Juncu helped guide the Blue Demons to a match-clinching set win, 25-13.
