Blue Demons earn their fourth draw of season
VILLANOVA, Pa. – DePaul women's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with Villanova, Thursday evening at the Higgins Soccer Complex. Sophomore Shayna da Silva recorded her first career finish with a 63rd minute equalizer from Graduate student Beth Smyth.
"I'm proud of the team for showing a much stronger performance in the second half," said head coach Michele O'Brien. We showed the desire and passion that I expect from our players. However, we need to be ready from the opening whistle and start strong; we need to take advantage of the first half. While I'm proud of our strong second-half efforts—something we've traditionally excelled at, turning up the intensity and changing games—we need to figure out how to start matches that way."
DePaul (2-5-4, 0-1-2 BIG EAST) continued its streak of being unbeaten in five of its last six matches after its tie with Villanova. The Blue Demons rang off thirteen shots against the Wildcats, good for the most of any match this season.
Villanova (4-5-3, 1-1-2 BIG EAST) earns its third draw of the season after being outshot by the Blue Demons 10-5 in the second half. Junior Goalkeeper Hannah Dickinson led the way by collecting four saves in the match, keeping the tie at a standstill.
How It Happened
DePaul opened the match aggressively, receiving five offsides calls in the first 26 minutes of play.
Senior Susie Soderstrom began her five-shot day early, registering DePaul's first attempt in the 13th minute.
Elena Milam picked up her first of two saves on a shot attempt by Susanna Soderstrom by the 21st minute.
The Blue Demons managed only two more attempts before halftime, with shots on goal by Soderstrom and Tessa Fagerson.
Villanova's lone goal came when Soderman converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute, giving the Wildcats the lead just before the break.
In typical fashion, DePaul came out in the second half with renewed energy, firing off five shots in the first 18 minutes.
In the 63rd minute, sophomore midfielder Shayna da Silva found her spot deep in the box, sending home a goal off a pass from Beth Smyth.
Nahla Dominguez and Soderstrom each sent a few more shots on target but came up short following da Silva's goal.
In DePaul's final breakaway, Briley Hill got past Villanova's last defender, but contact from the defender altered her shot, and the chance fell short.
The Blue Demons received their lone yellow card in the 88th minute when sophomore Lea Eisenring picked up her first of the season. DePaul held off Villanova's final attack and secured a 1-1 draw.
