Blue Demons earn third-straight tie
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer secured its third consecutive draw on Sunday afternoon, with a second-half equalizer from junior Briley Hill leading to a 1-1 stalemate against Marquette. Hill, DePaul's leading shot-taker this season, netted her first goal as a Blue Demon in the 74th minute of the match.
"We put in a solid performance today, creating some great opportunities in both halves," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "We'll definitely look back at the film and identify areas where we could've created more dangerous chances, but for us, it's about continuing to do what we've been doing and doing it well. The final piece is putting games away earlier and capitalizing on those chances, finding the back of the net more consistently. Briley's first goal is well-deserved—she works tirelessly, and I'm thrilled for her. I'm happy for our team, and I feel this could be the boost she needs to open the floodgates for more goals in the next few games."
DePaul (2-5-5, 0-1-2 BIG EAST) earned its fifth draw of the season and third in conference play with the 1-1 result against Marquette. Junior Freya Jupp notched her first assist, pushing her team-leading point total to seven. Elena Milam recorded three saves in the draw, continuing to impress in goal.
Marquette (4-7-3, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) concluded its BIG EAST road trip Sunday afternoon with its third draw of the year, outshooting the Blue Demons 13-10. The Golden Eagles held a significant advantage in corner kicks, earning 11 to DePaul's three, but finished with the same number of shots on target as the Blue Demons.
How It Happened
In the first ten minutes, Marquette dominated possession, registering two corner kicks and the first shot of the game, but to no avail.
DePaul responded promptly with shots by Shayna da Silva, Freya Jupp, and Nahla Dominguez in a six-minute span just before the 21st minute.
Three more Marquette corner kicks followed, with the Golden Eagles firing four shot attempts at Elena Milam in just four minutes. Julia O'Neill, Haley Christianson, Mia Haertle, and Tess O'Connell were among the Marquette players to attempt a shot in this span.
The Blue Demons set up for a late first-half corner in the 40th minute, followed by a Katelyn Jamie shot attempt in the final minute of the half, but neither DePaul nor Marquette could capitalize on the back-and-forth opportunities.
Three early second-half corner kicks set the stage for Marquette, as O'Connell scored off a header from Caroline Cline in the 56th minute.
DePaul attempted its first shot of the second half in the 71st minute, with senior Susie Soderstrom coming up just short.
The Blue Demons' fortunes changed when Briley Hill broke away in the 74th minute, leveling the score at 1-1.
Hill's finish energized DePaul's late-game attack, leading to four more shot attempts in the final ten minutes. However, two were blocked, one sailed wide right, and one was saved by Elise Krone—her third and final save of the game—keeping the score tied as the match concluded.
