Blue Demons tie 1-1 against the Friars
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul women's soccer fought to a 1-1 draw with Providence on Thursday night, capping off its 2024 regular season. Freshman Katelyn Jamie netted her first career goal in the 75th minute to equalize with the Friars, keeping the Blue Demons' playoff hopes alive.
DePaul (5-7-6, 3-3-4 BIG EAST) concluded its regular season unbeaten in seven of ten conference matches. The Blue Demons outpaced Providence in shots (8-6), shots on goal (6-4), and corner kicks (5-3).
Providence (6-9-3, 3-5-2 BIG EAST) closed its season Thursday, unable to stifle DePaul's counter in the second half. After upsetting then-No. 20 Xavier eleven days ago, the Friars went winless in their final three outings, seeing their playoff bid slip away.
How it Happened
The Friars opened the match with an early shot in the fifth minute, but Elena Milam secured the save to halt Providence's offensive momentum.
In the 14th minute, Schuyler Riese launched a free kick three-quarters downfield. Providence's attempted clearance misfired, creating a chance for Briley Hill, who narrowly missed finishing in the attacking third.
DePaul's first shot came in the 16th minute with a powerful strike by Susie Soderstrom from inside the box, but Providence's Emma Bodmer made the save to keep the game scoreless.
Beth Smyth had two attempts come up short, followed by shots from Lea Eisenring in the 35th and 36th minutes.
Providence found fortune in the 39th minute with a penalty kick goal by Kayla Briggs, assisted by a clever setup from Ella McBride.
DePaul finally responded in the 75th minute when Katelyn Jamie scored her first career goal. Following a corner from Grace Menser and a header into the box by Schuyler Riese, Jamie positioned herself perfectly to equalize.
In the 87th minute, Beth Smyth broke free for DePaul's final scoring chance, but Ellie Thallman's block kept the Blue Demons from capitalizing on the late opportunity.
