DePaul Claims Four Singles Victories on First Day of Spartan Invite

Stula, Gibson impress in singles efforts
EAST LANSING, MICH. – DePaul began its last tournament of the 2024 calendar year at the Spartan Invite on Friday, Nov. 1 on the campus of Michigan State.
Play opened with singles matches at 8:00 a.m. CT. Sophomore Sasha Stula recorded the Blue Demons' first win of the morning against Katya Shepherd (Northwestern), 6-1, 6-3, to maintain her streak of success. Stula is now tied atop the team in wins with five during the fall campaign.
While only notching one victory in their first five singles contests, the Scarlet and Blue provided a strong response to take the final three matches on the day. Fellow sophomore Helin Alvarez defeated the Hawkeyes' Jessica Matthews in a resilient showing. Alvarez dropped the first set 2-6, but won the final two sets in decisive fashion, 6-3, 6-3.
A pair of freshmen from the United Kingdom each earned a victory to round out singles competition for DePaul. Isabella Gibson turned in an outstanding performance with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Sarah Fazlagic (Michigan State). Scotland native, Eleanor Cochran, followed suit versus Butler's Emma Beavin. Cochran proved victorious in a back-and-forth battle, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
In doubles competition, coach Marisa Arce pushed the right buttons, utilizing two teams that had yet to play with one another this season, but still producing DePaul victories. Junior Hannah Smith and Stula tallied a 7-5 advantage over Pratt/Rabjohns of Northwestern while Alvarez and Gibson continued their magic from singles action, taking down Kutlova/Fazlagic in a 6-2 decision.
