DePaul Battles to Five-Set Loss Against Georgetown
11/3/2024 4:06:00 PM | WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Juncu, Kindelberger, and Saeger each tally career-highs
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball narrowly fell to the Georgetown Hoyas 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 14-16) Sunday afternoon. The Blue Demons drop to 16-8 overall, and 8-4 in league play.
The DePaul offense was paced by outside hitter Jill Pressly, who poured in a match-leading 19 kills, alongside ten digs. Freshman Luisa Juncu posted a new career-high for the second consecutive match, adding 16 kills at a .452 clip.
Setter Amanda Saeger also tallied her career-high, contributing 34 assists on the day. Fellow setter Ashley Cudiamat notched 26 assists and 13 digs, for her tenth double-double of the year.
Defensively, senior Aly Kindelberger added her career-high nine blocks, while Audrey Klemp put up six of her own. Libero Rachel Krasowski earned a match-leading 24 digs on the day, her tenth match this season with 20 or more.
"Georgetown played fearless" said head coach Marie Zidek.
"It's only the second time we've out-killed a team and lost this year. They handled the pressurized moments better, and it is amazing how one or two plays leave you feeling like a gladiator or completely defeated. The message for this group is that for some reason we are handed this lesson now. We must let this really sting, then we must practice harder than ever before to go get wins on the road, and continue chasing a BIG EAST tournament berth. There is a lot we can learn from, and we can't abandon who we are just because we have some learning left to do. We will be back."
The Hoyas were led by 15 kills from outside hitter Mary Grace Goyena, and 21 digs from libero Karis Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The sides were close early, with three kills from Goyena, and one each from Klemp, Pressly, Juncu, and sophomore Katelynn Oxley. The Hoyas took the lead by three mid-set and retained it the rest of the way, despite three more kills from both Klemp and Juncu. Consecutive Blue Demon errors gave Georgetown the set, 25-22.
SET TWO
DePaul jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after two kills from Klemp and one from sophomore Meghan Scholz. The Blue Demons couldn't pull away until they recorded four consecutive kills in the middle of the set, three of which were put down by Klemp. They extended their lead to as many as five, and a Kindelberger kill earned the set win for DePaul, 25-20.
SET THREE
Three errors and five kills each from both sides kept the set equal heading into the first timeout. From there, DePaul went on a 5-0 scoring run to earn a five-point lead, and they maintained the advantage the rest of the way, with three kills each from Juncu and Pressly. An attack error from the Hoyas closed the set, 25-19 in favor of the Blue Demons.
SET FOUR
Three Goyena kills and two DePaul attack errors gave the Hoyas an eight-point advantage through the middle of the set. The Blue Demons rallied to tie the set at 22, with three kills from Juncu and four from Pressly. DePaul could not overcome two errors and the Hoyas took the set on a Dionna Mitchell kill, 25-23.
SET FIVE
The deciding set was the closest of the match, featuring eight ties and four lead changes. Georgetown started quickly, earning the first two points, but two Klemp kills and one from Oxley evened the set at seven points apiece. From there, the sides again swapped kills, until a 4-0 scoring run gave the Hoyas the set victory, 16-14.
