Sophomore earns conference's top honor after sensational season
CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer sophomore Noeh Hernandez was named 2024 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year on Tuesday morning after a vote of the league's head coaches. Hernandez also earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors after leading the Blue Demons in goals, assists, points, shots and shots on goal.
Â
The Bridgeview, Illinois native had a standout sophomore campaign after a freshman season that saw him named BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year and named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team. In 2024, Hernandez tallied eight goals and nine assists to total 25 points. He ranks third in the league in goals, first in assists and second in points while finishing third in shots with 43. His assist total ranks him 12th among all Division I players while he sits in 23rd nationally in points.
Â
He led DePaul to its best offensive season in nearly three decades with goal involvement in 17 of the team's 32 goals in 2024. Hernandez notched a point in 11 of his 17 appearances and eight of those performances were multi-point outings. Against Loyola Chicago on Sept. 24, he matched his career-high with four points (1G, 2A) while scoring the game-winner. In a crucial win over Butler in the regular season finale Hernandez put up four points (1G, 2A) to aid the Blue Demons to a postseason berth.
Â
Hernandez is making his mark in the DePaul record books, too. His nine assists in a season ties him for second in a campaign with Joe Oweko's nine helpers in 1985. With eight goals, he is tied for sixth with Alex Mangan and Steffen Vroom's 2011 goal total. His point output of 25 is the most for a Blue Demon in a season since at least 2001.
Â
He is DePaul's first major regular season award winner since Brian Visser earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007. Â He is the first sophomore to be crowned Midfielder of the Year since Georgetown's Dante Polvara claimed the honor after the 2020 season that was played in the spring of 2021.
Â
DePaul closed the season with a 6-8-3 record, the most wins since 2021, and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2016.
