Four Blue Demons finish in double figures
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball earned its ninth-straight win over Loyola Chicago on Tuesday night with a 75-60 victory inside Gentile Arena. The Blue Demons utilized a balanced attack with four finishing in double figures.
Meg Newman and Jorie Allen dominated the inside game with 16 points apiece as DePaul outscored Loyola 38-26 in the paint. Newman's point total marked a career-high with the redshirt-junior shooting 7-for-9 (.777) from the field. The duo combined for 15 rebounds while Allen added five steals and two blocks.
Junior guard Taylor Johnson-Matthews recorded 15 points in addition to a team-best four assists. Freshman Angelina Smith posted the first double-digit outing of her young career with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.
Sumer Lee and Grace Carstensen chipped in season-highs with nine and six points, respectively.
DePaul (2-1) turned 23 Rambler turnovers into 27 points.
Naelle Bernard led three Ramblers in double-digit scoring with 15 points.
How it Happened
Meg Newman led DePaul's early scoring output, hitting on three of her first four shots to put the Blue Demons up 10-5 midway through the first period. The Ramblers went three-for-three during their 12-6 run to close out the first ten minutes on top, 17-16.
Loyola hit two-straight threes early in the second period, but Allen and Smith responded with two layups to tie the score at 25. Carstensen made an impact off the bench in the second period, knocking down two three-pointers. DePaul continued its run, forcing four Loyola turnovers amidst a 9-0 run with baskets by Allen, Johnson-Matthews and Smith. Despite the spurt, both teams went on to hit just one field goal in the final three minutes, with the Blue Demons on top at the half, 37-31.
DePaul opened the second-half with a vengeance by forcing five turnovers, with four different Blue Demons scoring to combine for ten unanswered to go up 47-31. Holding Loyola scoreless for nearly seven minutes, DePaul extended its lead thanks to eight third-quarter points from Newman. The Ramblers eventually responded by scoring ten points in the final three minutes, also nabbing six offensive boards in just under six minutes. DePaul led 53-41 after three periods.
Two quick three pointers by Lee and Johnson-Matthews extended the Blue Demon lead, 60-44. For the final seven minutes and thirty seconds of the game, both teams traded a combined eleven field goals. DePaul had its best offensive output in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points and coming out on top by a final score of 75-60.
