How It Happened
After Texas opened the game on an 8-2 run, the Blue Demons held the Longhorns without a point for a near two-minute span, going on a 7-0 run of their own. The Longhorns held a 21-10 edge after 10 minutes after sinking a trio pull-up jumpers to end the period.
Allen had eight first-quarter points.
The Blue Demons started the second period forcing a turnover and Johnson-Matthews made the Longhorns pay with a layup on the other end. Freshman Angelina Smith and Ohiaeri each buried triples, cutting the lead to 26-20. Texas countered, holding a 10-point edge half-way through the quarter. The Longhorns collected seven offensive rebounds in the frame, building a 15-point halftime advantage, 43-28.
DePaul knocked down 10-of-12 free throws in the first half.
The Scarlet and Blue began the third quarter the same way they started the second, forcing a Longhorns miscue and capitalizing. Sumer Lee took a charge and Allen laid it in on the Blue Demons' first offensive possession. A Matthews-Johnson jumper ended a 7-0 Longhorn run before Ohiaeri laced her second triple of the night and Allen added six more points to pace the Blue Demons, but Texas poured in 18 points in the paint in the third period to take a 69-41 lead into the fourth.
Freshman Ellery Minch made her first collegiate basket, netting a three to open the scoring for the Blue Demons in the fourth quarter. DePaul and Texas traded scores on three consecutive possessions, including Minch hitting a second shot from long-range.
