Blue Demons score most goals in a game since 2009
The Blue Demons booked their first trip to the conference tournament since 2016 by way of a win against the Bulldogs paired with a Creighton triumph over Marquette on the final day of the regular season.
DePaul (6-7-3, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) scored its most goals in a game (5) since the 2009 season with graduate forward Logan Finnegan bagging a brace in his return to Indianapolis after spending four seasons at then-IUPUI.
Sophomore sensation Noeh Hernandez contributed to three of the five goals on the outing with a pair of assists along with his second penalty kick conversion this season.
Freshman forward Luca Iaccino netted the first goal of his career just before the first half ended while Christian Baumgartner got in on the scoring with a header in the first eight minutes of the second stanza.
Goalkeeper Santiago Davila made four saves while facing 20 Butler shots.
How It Happened
The Blue Demons wasted no time, finding the back of the net in the first 57 seconds of the match. Liam Mullins won a duel inside the box and fired a shot with his left boot before Finnegan collected the rebound and cleaned it up on the goal line to make it 1-0.
After a couple of near misses from Hernandez in the early moments of the match, he capitalized on his opportunity, converting on a PK after being brought down on the right side of the box by a Butler defender. The sophomore made the score 2-0 in the 21st minute.
Minutes later, the Blue Demons turned clearance into a chance as Finnegan won the ball in the midfield for Mullins to provide service into the attacking third. Finnegan won the foot race and used finesse to make it a three nil game after 24 minutes of action.
The barrage of goals continued in the 31st minute when Baumgartner provided a through ball up the right channel for Hernandez to find it, center it and serve it up for Iaccino to put home DePaul's fourth tally of the first half.
DePaul outshot Butler 9-6 in the first 45 minutes of play.
Jayden Waski earned a free kick opportunity for the Blue Demons in the 53rd minute after contact near the touch line. Hernandez lined up the kick and found a cutting Baumgartner who connected near post with his head to give DePaul one for the thumb.
Palmer Ault scored two of Butler's three goals in the second half.
