Graduate forward nets 27 points as Blue Demons dispatch Flames
CHICAGO – Jorie Allen scored a career-high 27 points and four Blue Demons finished in double figures as DePaul dismantled UIC in the second half en route to a 73-56 victory on Friday night at Wintrust Arena.
Despite trailing by as many as eight in the second quarter, the Blue Demons tied the game at halftime and never looked back outscoring the Flames 40-23 in the final 20 minutes for their 36th-consecutive victory over UIC.
Allen finished in double figures for the 11th-straight game to start the season and shot at a 78-percent (11-for-14) clip to pace the Blue Demons. She scored 17 points and went 7-for-9 from the field in the second half to help DePaul claim the victory.
Taylor Johnson-Matthews finished with 12 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, for her eighth game in double figures this season.
Meg Newman and Angelina Smith poured in 10 points apiece to round out the double-digit scorers. Newman posted eight rebounds while dishing out a game-high and career-high five assists.
Redshirt-sophomore Haley Walker did a little bit of everything in 21 minutes off the bench with five points, eight rebounds and three assists.
DePaul (4-7) forced 23 UIC turnovers, the third outing in four games with 20 or more opponent miscues. The Blue Demons defense forced UIC to shoot just 15-percent (2-for-13) from three on the evening. The Flames entered Friday's contest top-20 in Division I in three-point field goal percentage.
Keimari Rimmer, Makiyah Williams and Arin Freeman all finished with 11 points to lead UIC.
How It Happened
The two sides combined for eight turnovers through the first five minutes of the game while trading buckets. DePaul took its first lead of the game halfway through the period with a Smith bucket in transition. Allen netted three-straight baskets to put DePaul in front 18-17 before the Flames knocked down a pair of free throws to close the first quarter with a 19-18 edge.
UIC opened the quarter with seven unanswered points before Newman broke the drought two minutes in. Shakara McCline, making her second start of the season, knocked in the first triple of the game for the Blue Demons to cut the deficit to five halfway through the second quarter before DePaul closed the half on an 8-1 run to tie the score at 33 headed into the locker room.
Allen scored DePaul's first nine points of the third period before Angelina Smith connected from long-distance to put the Blue Demons in front 45-36 and force a Flames timeout with 2:36 remaining. A midrange pull up from Allen as time expired in the quarter stretched the lead to seven, 49-42, and halted a late surge by the Flames.
The Blue Demons opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run and stretched their lead to 20 on a three-point field goal from Walker. DePaul shot 73-percent in the stanza, its highest field-goal percentage of any quarter this season, to seal the victory.
