DePaul Welcomes Marquette to Wintrust Arena Sunday

Blue Demons and Golden Eagles tipoff at 2 p.m.
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 29 when it hosts longtime foe Marquette inside Wintrust Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. with the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloCollege carrying the coverage.

Demon Doings
DePaul closes out a five-game homestand on Sunday in which the Blue Demons have gone 3-1 including back-to-back wins to improve to 6-8 overall.

In the conference opener before the holiday break, DePaul used dominant defense and a balanced offense to take down Butler 66-43 at Wintrust Arena on Dec. 21. The Blue Demons held the Bulldogs to its lowest point output of the season while Taylor Johnson-Matthews, Jorie Allen and Meg Newman all finished in double figures.

Johnson-Matthews was honored on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the first time this season after finishing with a career-best 22 points on 50-percent shooting against Butler.

Averaging a team-high 18.8 points per game, Allen has finished in double figures in all 14 games for DePaul while also adding 6.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists a contest. The graduate forward is the lone player in the BIG EAST to rank top-10 in points, rebounds, assists and field-goal percentage.

It will be a battle of the boards on Sunday as the Golden Eagles and Blue Demons rank first and second, respectively, in the league in rebounds per game. DePaul has outrebounded opponents just five times this season with Newman grabbing a team-best 7.7 boards per game which is fourth in the conference. Â

The Golden Eagles step into BIG EAST play 8-3 on the season and are coming off a 45-point win over Stonehill in their non-conference finale prior to the Christmas break.

Marquette welcomed six transfers to Milwaukee prior to the 2024-25 season, but it's been a pair of returners who have led the way through the first two months of the season as sophomore forward Skylar Forbes is averaging team-highs of 15.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while senior guard Lee Volker adds 14.0 points per contest in addition to three assists.

As a team, the Golden Eagles lead the BIG EAST in rebounding with 41.9 per game while ranking second in the league in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 54 points.

Cara Consuegra is in her first season leading the Marquette program after spending 13 seasons as the head coach at Charlotte.

The two teams will square off for the 87th time on Sunday afternoon with the Blue Demons holding a 49-37 edge in the all-time series.
