Peoples, Allen and Gilbert all finish in double figures in the loss
OMAHA, Neb. – A stagnant offensive start coupled with a 30-point first quarter from No. 21 Creighton was the difference as DePaul fell 88-59 at D.J. Sokol Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bluejays were tough to stop, especially in the first 10 minutes, shooting 64-percent from the field in the first stanza while the Blue Demons struggled to find their footing in the early going.
Anaya Peoples led three Blue Demons in double figures with 17 points and nine rebounds in addition to three steals and three assists.
Jorie Allen finished with 15 points behind a 9-for-10 effort from the free throw line to go with seven rebounds. Graduate guard Katlyn Gilbert posted 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting for her ninth double-figure performance this season.
Creighton (20-3, 11-2 BIG EAST) won its 10th game in a row behind Emma Ronsiek's 29 points while Jauren Jensen added 19.
How it Happened
Brynn Masikewich hit an early three before the Bluejays rattled off a 17-2 run to take a 12-point lead halfway through the first quarter. Out of the timeout, DePaul scored three of the next four baskets followed by a pair of free throws from Allen to cut the deficit to six, 19-13. Creighton closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to claim a 30-13 advantage after 10 minutes.
The Bluejays came out in the second quarter hitting four of their first six three-point field goal attempts to widen their lead. Gilbert intercepted an inbounds pass and took it the length of the floor for two before dropping in two free throws a few possessions later bringing the Blue Demons within 19. DePaul held Creighton scoreless for the final two minutes of the first half, but still faced an uphill battle trailing 49-29 heading into the locker room.
Allen had a team-high eight points after the first 20 minutes.
The first three minutes of the third quarter saw each team visit the charity stripe a trio of times. Allen connected on the first field goal of the second half for the Blue Demons midway through the period. Peoples scored three-straight field goals including two in the last 20 seconds of the quarter to trim down Creighton's lead to 19, 66-47.
Back-to-back baskets to start the fourth electrified the Blue Demons to come within 15, but that was as close as it would come as the Bluejays ended the game on a 14-4 run to close out the victory.
