Jorie Allen posts team-high 18 points on 80-percent shooting
CHICAGO – Trailing by 23 with a minute remaining in the third quarter, DePaul women's basketball put together a ferocious comeback bid, coming within four in the latter stages of the game, but it wasn't enough in a 69-58 decision to Marquette on Tuesday evening. In a game characterized by runs, a sluggish start and a lopsided third quarter dug the Blue Demons too deep of a hole to recover from in the end.
Graduate forward Jorie Allen led DePaul with 18 points on 80-percent shooting from the field in addition to five rebounds and two steals. Allen's outing was her third-straight double figure performance and fourth in the last five games.
Katlyn Gilbert joined Allen in double figures with 12 points while also posting six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Anaya Peoples added a team-best 12 rebounds to go with nine points and three steals.
DePaul (12-15, 4-10 BIG EAST) recorded 13 steals on the night, the 14th game this season with double-digit takeaways, while holding a 37-35 edge on the glass.
Marquette (19-6, 8-6) saw three players finish in double figures led by Makenzie Hare's 19 points.
How it Happened
Peoples scored the first bucket of the game before the Golden Eagles scored seven unanswered. The early going was characterized by sloppy play as each had four turnovers at the media timeout. The Blue Demons were held without a field goal for the final five minutes of the first and trailed 15-7.
The Blue Demons were held scoreless for the first four minutes of the second quarter as Marquette ballooned their lead to 16. Shakara McCline broke the drought with a runner in the lane.
Allen and Brynn Masikewich aided DePaul's offensive efforts with a combined 10 points to close the gap. McCline closed the second quarter with a triple, capping a 13-2 run for the Blue Demons to trail by five 27-22.
Marquette netted three field goals in 90 seconds to open the second half and force a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons were outscored by 14 in the third quarter, but scored the last four points of the period to get the deficit under 20.
DePaul opened the fourth with a sense of urgency, forcing three turnovers and converting into three field goals to come within 13, 53-40. A seven point-spurt brought the Blue Demons within six, 57-51 before coming as close as four points on a drive through the lane by Peoples with 2:16 remaining in the fourth. Forced to foul with little time left, Marquette made six free throws as time winded down to hold on for the win.
