DePaul to Play Duo of Weekend Matches

Blue Demons travel to face Notre Dame, host Illinois State
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis will make the short drive to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Friday,, before returning to the Windy City on Sunday to face off against Illinois State.Â
While this is the first meeting between Notre Dame and DePaul in dual action this year, the two programs are familiar with one another. The Blue Demons faced the Fighting Irish during the tournament portion of the season in the fall. Both Freshman Sasha Stula and Junior Eva Goncharov picked up singles victories. First serve is set for Friday, Feb. 16 at 2:30 P.M. CST on the Eck Tennis Pavilion courts. The Blue Demons are back home Sunday, Feb. 18 at 12:30 P.M CST against Illinois State at XS Tennis Village.Â
DePaul (5-4) was victorious in all three matches last weekend to move above .500 for the first time this season. The Scarlet and Blue began its winning streak with a 4-3 win in comeback fashion over Miami (OH) on Friday, Feb. 9. Two days later, the Blue Demons went 2-0 with a resounding 4-0 triumph of Northern Illinois followed by a 4-3 clincher against Chicago State. Sophomore Hannah Smith earned BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week honors after a 3-0 weekend.Â
Smith and her counterpart, Greta Carbone are also making headway in doubles play. The tandem improved to 5-1 on court one in dual action while posting a 14-5 overall record this season. Graduate students Emily Casati and Yuliya Kizelbasheva have found their stride as well with a 4-1 dual record on court two. The two doubles pairings have been consistent for Head Coach Marisa Arce as of late.Â
Notre Dame (5-2) enters the weekend with a perfect home record in four matches. Last time out, the Fighting Irish lost to No.25 Wisconsin 5-2 which snapped a three-game winning streak. Julia Andreach and Nibi Ghosh lead the way for the Blue and Gold with a combined 11-0 record in singles play to begin the dual season.Â
Illinois State has won five of six matches to begin the dual season. Head Coach Maja Kovacek is in her tenth campaign leading the Redbirds. Last season, Kovacek orchestrated an 8-0 record in conference play elevating the team to the No. 1 overall seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.Â
